LICHFIELD SCOUTS SAVED FROM THE DARK BY CARING COUNCILLOR

SCOUTS from 7th Lichfield Scout Group were dismayed earlier this year to discover that the electrics in their beloved scout hut were seriously in need of an overhaul.

An annual electrical safety inspection had revealed a worrying list of urgent work that had to be completed. Chair of the Scout Group Mike Armstrong explained: “The work was necessary because much of the electrics had not been updated since 1970 when the hut was originally built – with money raised by the local community, so that young people could have a base for their scouting activities.

“With a thriving group of over 140 young members, there was no option to close the hut, we knew we had to find the money from somewhere.

“It was with great relief that our local county councillor – Janet Eagland stepped in and agreed to give us a grant of £1376 to help bring our electrics up to scratch. We are so grateful for the money which will ensure the hut on Ash Grove is able to provide a safe base for our two beaver colonies, two cub scout packs and two scout troops for some years to come.”

Cllr Janet Eagland, county councillor for Lichfield Rural North, is passionate about providing opportunities for young people in her community and believes that scouting offers excellent opportunities for children to have adventures, fun and be challenged within a safe environment.

She explained: “I am delighted that we were able to help 7th Lichfield Scout Group with a grant to help with their wiring and electrics. They are a very strong and thriving group, who engage with young people to offer experiences in sports and outdoor activities they may not otherwise receive.”

The Staffordshire Local Community Fund is an initiative which supports communities directly through local county councillors. Each councillor has £10,000 a year to allocate to groups and organisations in their division to provide and improve locally important services and promote community pride.

IT WAS THE YEAR the Beatles first performed at The Cavern Club, John F Kennedy became the 35th president of the United States, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space, the Berlin Wall went up and British double agent George Blake was sent down for 42 years.

For 7th Lichfield Scout Group, 1961 was also their red letter year, as the group was formed to bring the adventure of scouting to children who were keen to ‘have a go’.
